Cold Sore Home Remedies
Home Remedies For All Mouth Sores (including canker sores, cold sore blisters, and fever blisters).
When you feel the itching and/or burning, start this cold sore home remedy by taking an antacid such as MaaloxTM or MylantaTM by mouth regularly. If you don't catch the blistering in time, break all blisters when they form, and apply the antacid directly to the affected area. Keep the affected area dry and apply rubbing alcohol to the area after showers or exposure to moisture. Continue this regimen until the area is cleared up of cold sores or other mouth sores (usually within one week).
Using the oil in a Vitamin E softgel cap is a cold sore home remedy that will dry the cold sores or other sores up within 5-7 days. You will need to insert a clean sharp pin into the softgel cap 3-4 times and squeeze the oil out and apply to the infected area. Thought I would pass it along. Works great on my children when they experience cold sores after running a high fever.
Take a cotton ball saturated with an antiseptic mouthwash (such as ListerineTM) and hold it on your cold sore or other blisters and it will take them away. You may have to hold the cotton ball on the cold sores for awhile. This treatment will sting.
Boron 3 mg per day can prevent herpes cold sore flare-ups. Boron is available at health food stores.
Apply hydrogen peroxide with a cotton swab on the canker sore (one part hydrogen peroxide and one part water). Then dab a small amount of Milk of Magnesia on the canker sore 3-4 times a day. This is not only soothing, but appears to help healing.
The following steps can also make any type of mouth sore feel better:
- Gargle with cool water or eat popsicles (particularly helpful if you have a mouth burn).
- Avoid hot beverages, spicy or salty foods, and citrus.
- Take pain relievers like acetaminophen.
For canker sores, try one or more of the following:
- Rinse with salt water.
- Apply a thin paste of baking soda and water.
- Mix 1 part hydrogen peroxide with 1 part water and apply this mixture to the canker sores using a cotton swab.
- Non prescription preparations, like Orabase, can protect a canker sore inside the lip and on the gums. Blistex or Campho-Phenique may provide some relief of canker sores and fever blisters, especially if applied when the sore initially appears.
