Health Benefits of Garlic Do Not Have To Stink

Many people miss the health benefits of garlic due to its pungent smell. For many garlic fans, the sometimes-objectionable odor far outweighs the benefits.

One dictionary defines garlic as “a hardy plant, Allium sativum, of the amaryllis family whose strongly, pungent bulb is used in cookery and medicine.” The definition of allium sativum even refers to its medicinal properties.

As one of history’s most ancient healing herbs, some call garlic cloves a natural wonder drug. It one of the most researched herbs of the Amaryllidacae family, which includes shallots, onions, and chives.

Garlic prescriptions have been found chiseled on stone tablets thousands of years old. This healing herb was popular in the pre-history world from China to India to Spain. It is even referenced in the Bible.

Allicin and diallyl sulfides are thought to be the two main chemicals responsible for garlic health benefits. As a group, sulfide compounds generally have a potent smell (such as hydrogen sulfide in rotten eggs), and garlic is no exception. The allicin compound is initially inert, and requires chewing, chopping, or crushing to activate its antibiotic properties.

How powerful are medicinal garlic benefits? It is estimated that a medium sized garlic clove has an equivalent antibiotic effect as approximately 100,000 penicillin units. Oral penicillin dosages range from 0.6 to 1.2 million units, or between six and 12 garlic cloves.
