Head lice are tiny, wingless insects of the orders Mallophaga or Anoplura. Each louse is an external parasite to warm-blooded animals, including humans. Head lice inhabit the fur and skin of mammals, which is why these blood-sucking nuisances live on, and lay their eggs or nits on, the hair and scalp of humans. Head lice infestation is also called pediculosis.

Headlice are not generally dangerous to humans, but there is another compelling reason to get rid of them. Lice outbreaks tend to occur in areas where many people are concentrated together, such as schools. There is a prevalent but untrue social stigma that children with lice on their heads are not well-groomed and come from poor or dirty homes. This is not true. A louse does not check your credit report before jumping on your child's head. It simply is looking for a warm head where it can drink blood, lay nits, hatch nymphs, and start the entire life-cycle (or lice-cycle) again.

Description of Head Lice
An adult head louse has six legs, is about the size of a sesame seed, and is tan to greyish-white. If the infested person has dark hair, the adult louse will look darker. Female head lice lay the nits (eggs) and are usually larger than males. Adult head lice can survive up to 30 days on the head of an infested person. Where Do Head Lice Hide?
Head lice eggs (nits) can be found firmly attached to the hair shaft. Adult head lice are most commonly found on the scalp. Look behind the ears and near the neckline at the back of the neck.
